The film series features stories of Catholics whose loved ones have died by suicide. When a Loved One Dies By Suicide explains Church teaching on suicide and offers prayers of comfort and support.
This film resouces is based on the book, When A Loved One Dies By Suicide: Comfort, Hope, and Healing for Grieving Catholics, which was written by and for Catholics who have experienced suicide loss. Now, the stories sensitively and honestly shared within these pages have been turned into the compelling films featured in this resource. You will hear from fellow Catholics—both clergy/religious and laity—as they share about their loved ones, their journey with grief, and the comfort and hope they have found in faith, community, and the Church.

Who is this resource for?
When A Loved One Dies By Suicide is a grief support resource for those experiencing suicide loss. It can be used in a grief support group or as a resource for individuals impacted by suicide loss. While the films and reflection guides can be used independently of the book, groups have the option to assign reading from the book as well. The book chapters cover the same content as the films, but contain greater detail.
Though this resource is intended primarily for those who have lost loved ones to suicide, others may find it helpful and informative. Suicide and mental health challenges impact countless communities, and we are all called to the ministry of accompaniment. Listening to stories of suicide loss can cultivate greater compassion within us and prepare us to encounter suffering with grace. In the spirit of Christ’s call to accompaniment, we can all seek to offer prayerful support to our brothers and sisters who have experienced the trauma of suicide loss, walking with them through grief and interceding for their loved ones.

We support Catholic parishes and dioceses in establishing mental health ministries. Mental health ministries provide vital spiritual accompaniment for people experiencing mental illness, as well as those who care for them.
Founded in 1865 at Notre Dame, Indiana, Ave Maria Press, a ministry of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is a Catholic publishing company that serves the spiritual and formative needs of the Church and its schools, institutions, and ministers; Christian individuals and families; and others seeking spiritual nourishment.
In the tradition of Holy Cross, we are committed, as educators in the faith, to helping people know, love, and serve God and to spreading the gospel of Jesus through books and other resources.
Sanctuary provides free resources that meaningfully engage the topics of faith and mental health. Our content is developed in collaboration with theologians, psychologists, and people with lived experience of mental health challenges. These resources prepare communities of faith around the world to raise awareness, reduce stigma, support mental health, and promote mental wellbeing.
