    • Prayers  Pope Francis for People with Mental Illness

      • Pope Francis has said that we need to “fully overcome the stigma with which mental illness has often been branded and…ensure that the culture of community prevails over the mentality of rejection.” He encourages us to build a community of warmth and affection where they “will find support and a light that opens them up to life.” The Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers has worked with the Pope's Wordwide Prayer Network at the Vatican to develop resources that will help parishes respond to the Pope’s call.

This eight-session course—designed for use in small groups—explores the realities of mental health and illness, as well as the vital need for faith-based community conversations about these topics.

We’re in a crisis and St. Dymphna, patron saint of mental health, is having a renaissance
Elena Zuniga didn’t go searching for the patron saint of anxiety, depression and mental illness, but St. Dymphna found her anyway. First, a small St. Dymphna charm showed up in her jewelry box without explanation. Then a St. Dymphna prayer card fell out of a book she happened to pick up. And after showing up one morning in 2019 for a meeting about a new mental health ministry at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Yorba Linda, Zuniga soon found herself serving as one of two co-leaders of St. Dymphna’s Disciples — a group that works to reduce stigma around mental illness in the church and supports those in mental distress.

We entrust our mission to Our Lady of Lourdes who is the special patroness for healing. May our Lady guide us so that those who live with a mental illness know that they are surrounded by her and her Son's healing presence and remember that they are never alone.
